The Metal Trades Department, AFL-CIO (MTD), would like to thank our affiliate NAGE and our friends at AFGE, AFSCME, and Democracy Forward for their work in defending the rights of union members within the federal civil service. We owe them a debt of gratitude.

Because of their hard work, federal judge George O’Toole extended his temporary restraining order preventing the Trump administration from implementing its deferred resignation program and suspending the Feb. 10 midnight deadline for federal employees to respond.

“This ruling is a small victory for federal employees who have repeatedly been the target of this administration,” said Ed Jones, MTD President.  “The federal workforce that Elon Musk and President Trump continue to attack deserve better than this. Their hard work keeps our nation safe and running smoothly.”

Judge O’Toole heard arguments in Boston on Monday in the lawsuit brought by the federal workers’ unions, which claimed that the administration’s “deferred resignation” program was illegal because Congress had not authorized it.

The unions argue the buyout offer is an “arbitrary, unlawful, short-fused ultimatum” to force the resignation of government workers under the “threat of mass termination.”

“We know this fight isn’t over yet,” said Jones. “But this small victory helps build up the morale of federal workers as they face repeated attacks from Elon Musk and the Trump administration.”

The Metal Trades Department continues to monitor this issue, as well as the other executive orders and directives coming out of the Trump administration.
