National Apprenticeship Week is a recognition of something the labor movement has long understood: union apprenticeship programs are the backbone of our nation’s skilled trades workforce.
For generations, these programs have built the men and women who construct, maintain, and power this country—across shipyards, energy facilities, manufacturing, public infrastructure, and beyond. They are not just training programs; they are the proven system for developing a highly skilled, safe, and reliable workforce.
Union apprenticeship works because it is rooted in real standards. Apprentices earn while they learn, combining hands-on training with classroom instruction under the guidance of experienced journeyworkers. The result is a workforce that is not only highly skilled, but trained to do the job right—efficiently and safely.
At a time when demand for skilled labor is rising, the answer is not theoretical—it already exists. Expanding union apprenticeship programs is the most effective way to meet workforce needs, strengthen our industries, and create pathways to good union careers.
The Metal Trades Department is proud to stand with our affiliated unions in continuing this work. During National Apprenticeship Week, we recognize the apprentices building their futures, the journeyworkers passing on their knowledge, and the union programs that make it all possible.
If we are serious about rebuilding and sustaining a strong trades workforce in this country, the path forward is clear: invest in and expand union apprenticeship.
