We mourn the passing of Walter W. Wise, President Emeritus of the Ironworkers’ International Union and a steadfast champion of working men and women across North America.
Brother Wise served as General President of the Ironworkers from 2011 to 2015, guiding the union with strength, steadiness, and an unwavering commitment to the membership. A lifelong union member, he understood from the ground up what solidarity meant—not as a slogan, but as a responsibility. He carried that responsibility with integrity throughout his career.
As a member of the Executive Council of the Metal Trades Department, he brought experience, practical wisdom, and a deep respect for the skilled trades. He believed in building power through unity and never lost sight of the dignity of the craft and the workers who make our industries run.
Walter W. Wise was a great leader because he never forgot who he was fighting for. His legacy lives on in the contracts strengthened, the safety protections advanced, and the generations of Ironworkers he helped mentor and inspire. We extend our deepest condolences to his family, friends, and the entire Ironworkers community. His life was defined by service, and the labor movement is stronger because of it.
