Federal Sector Presentation Icebreaker Collaboration Effort (ICE) Pact

Icebreaker Collaboration Effort (ICE) Pact

Presentation by Paul O'Connor, IBEW Government Employees Director.

  • Referred to as the ICE Pact, ICE is a 3-nation trilateral partnership (US, Canada, Finland). Its purpose: to boost shipbuilding and establish a stronger, more sophisticated multi-national Arctic ice breaker fleet to counter Russian and Chinese influence in the northern waters.
  • Another multibillion dollar/multiyear investment from all three allies into building polar-class icebreakers operated by the Coast Guard in the Arctic seas.
  • New shipping routes have opened-up as Arctic ice thins, melts, and exposes additional, potential shipping lanes, as well as keeping existing shipping lanes open for greater and greater periods of time each year.
  • Melting polar ice is not the only reason for the ICE PACT to exist. But it certainly has increased traffic and interest
