In February, Americans have traditionally celebrated the birthdays of President George Washington and Abraham Lincoln. A number of years ago, the birthday celebrations were combined into President’s Day. With that change, many of the valuable ideals and philosophies of these great men and office holders were forgotten.

As we celebrate Presidents Day 2020, Metal Trades workers and their families will honor our nation’s presidents, both past and present. Throughout time and immemorial, metal trades workers at the Department of Defense and our nation’s nuclear laboratories have been committed to excellence and success of the mission. Many times, and more often than not during our countries darkest days, these amazing workers looked to the ideals and values of the great men who have occupied the office of President of the United States for comfort and inspiration.

In what many consider the greatest American political speech — Lincoln’s Second Inaugural Address — Lincoln said, “With malice toward none, with charity for all, with firmness in the right as God gives us to see the right, let us strive on to finish the work we are in, to bind up the nation’s wounds, to care for him who shall have borne the battle and for his widow and his orphan, to do all which may achieve and cherish a just and lasting peace among ourselves and with all nations.”

While our culture has many fairy tale heroes in movies and comics, Americans have been lucky to have real heroes occupy the White House and Oval Office. We all should take seriously our obligation and duty to teach our children and loved ones about the ideals and values of our American Presidents.

In past years, many in our society saw this holiday as nothing more than a day away from work. These past few years have changed the meaning of Presidents’ Day for millions of Americans. At no other time in our history have so many felt a personal connection either pro or con with the serving president and the future of our nation.

Through strong leadership and personal involvement, the Metal Trades Department will continue to raise the awareness of all we come in contact with, promising to call unfettered balls and strikes regarding our President, his administration and all policies and decisions that affect America’s working families.
On this Presidents Day weekend, workers must continue in their efforts and commitment to ensure that America remains strong and prosperous.
